Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (approx. 15 mins). Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and carrots until softened (approx. 5 mins). Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Stir in ground beef/lamb and cook until browned. Mix in tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, peas, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 10 mins.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing it out to the edges.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for a crispy crust, if desired.
  6. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
