Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced ¼ inch thick (approximately 900g)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (57g)
- ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar (100g)
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (2.5ml)
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (1.25ml)
- ¼ cup water (60ml)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml)
Instructions:
- Melt butter in the large skillet over medium heat.
- Stir in granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook until the sugar begins to melt and caramelize slightly.
- Add apple slices to the skillet and toss to coat with the sugar mixture.
- Pour in water and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover the skillet and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the apples are tender but still hold their shape. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Check doneness by piercing with a fork – they should be soft, not mushy.
- If the sauce is too thin, remove the lid and cook for a few more minutes to allow the excess liquid to evaporate. The sauce should lightly coat the apples.
- Serve warm.
