Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 3 lbs / 1.36 kg)
- 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter (56g / 2 oz)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g / 3.5 oz)
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup water (60 ml)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15 ml)
Instructions:
- Peel, core, and slice the apples to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Melt butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Stir in granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Add the sliced apples and water to the skillet. Stir to coat the apples with the sugar mixture.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender but not mushy.
- Remove the lid and stir in the lemon juice. Increase the heat to medium and cook for another 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and the apples are caramelized.
- Serve warm.
