Ingredients:
- 2 lbs (900 grams) air-dry clay or stoneware clay
- Water (as needed for texture and consistency)
- 1 cup (240 ml) ceramic glaze (color of choice)
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Workspace: Clear a large flat surface and gather all materials and tools. Lay down plastic wrap if working with air-dry clay to keep it moist.
- Condition the Clay: Knead the clay until its soft and pliable. Add small amounts of water as needed.
- Shape the Crock: Roll the clay into a ball and flatten into a disk. Use the potters wheel if available, or shape by hand into desired crock shape.
- Build Up the Walls: If hand-building, pinch the edges to create the walls of the crock, ensuring uniform thickness. Smooth out the surface with a clay rib or sponge.
- Create the Base: Cut a circular base from the remaining clay and attach it to the bottom of the walls. Blend the seams with your fingers or tool to create a seamless finish.
- Drying: Allow the crock to dry thoroughly for several hours (2-3 hours depending on humidity).
- Firing: Once dry
- Glazing: Apply a ceramic glaze with a paintbrush after the first firing. Let dry, then fire again to set the glaze.
- Final Touches: Sand any rough edges once the final firing is complete.
