Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (113g) shortening, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) butter, softened
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Red food coloring (gel or liquid)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened shortening and butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  2. Gradually beat in the sifted powdered sugar, alternating with the salt, until a thick dough forms.
  3. Mix in the peppermint extract and milk until well combined.
  4. Divide the dough in half. Add red food coloring to one half, mixing until evenly colored.
  5. Wrap each half of the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until firm enough to handle.
  6. On a lightly powdered surface, roll out each half of the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Layer, twist, or marble the two colors together for a fun effect.
  8. Use cookie cutters or a knife to cut out desired shapes.
  9. Place the cut-out peppermints on a parchment-lined baking sheet or cutting board and chill in the refrigerator for another 30 minutes to 1 hour to firm up.
  10. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
