Ingredients:
- 4 cups (950 ml) water
- 1 cup (90g) steel-cut oats (not rolled oats!)
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.5 g) salt
- Optional: 1 tablespoon (14 g) unsalted butter or coconut oil
- Milk or Cream (optional topping)
- Brown Sugar (optional topping)
- Maple Syrup (optional topping)
- Fresh Fruit (Berries, Bananas, Apples, etc.) (optional topping)
- Nuts (Toasted Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans, etc.) (optional topping)
- Seeds (Chia, Flax, Pumpkin, etc.) (optional topping)
- Dried Fruit (Raisins, Cranberries, Apricots, etc.) (optional topping)
Instructions:
- In the saucepan, bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.
- Stir in the steel-cut oats and salt.
- Immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan tightly, and simmer for 25-30 minutes.
- Stir the oats every 5-7 minutes to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- The oats are done when they are tender and most of the water has been absorbed, creating a creamy texture. Add more water if needed during the cooking process.
- Take the saucepan off the heat and let it sit, covered, for a couple of minutes. This allows the oats to thicken further.
- Serve hot with your favorite toppings and a splash of milk or cream.
