Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (120ml) steel-cut oats (not rolled or instant)
  • 2 cups (475ml) water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon sweetener (maple syrup, honey, brown sugar)
  • Optional toppings: fruit, nuts, seeds, yoghurt, etc.

Instructions:

  1. In the saucepan, combine steel-cut oats, water, salt, and optional cinnamon.
  2. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 minute.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Do NOT remove the lid. Let the oats sit, covered, at room temperature for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  5. The next morning, if desired, warm the oats on the stovetop over low heat. Add a splash of milk or water if it has thickened too much. You can also microwave for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Stir in your sweetener of choice, if desired. Serve warm or cold with your favourite toppings.
